The legendary, bestselling fantasy saga that had millions spellbound now begins its newest chapter with Jarka Ruus—the captivating first book in the brand-new series.

Twenty years have passed since Grianne Ohmsford denounced her former life as the dreaded Ilse Witch—saved by the love of her brother, the magic of the Sword of Shannara, and the destruction of her evil mentor, the Morgawr. Now, fulfilling the destiny predicted for her by Walker Boh, she leads a new Druid Council dedicated to defending the Four Lands from anarchy and warfare. Yet despite her devotion to the greater good, Grianne still has enemies—those who cannot forget her reign of terror as the Ilse Witch and who covet her seat of power. When she vanishes suddenly, it falls to her young nephew, Pen Ohmsford; the faithful dwarf Tagwen; and the elf Ahren Elessedil, to undertake a perilous mission to save Grianne from a fate worse than death.

This entry in Brooks's new trilogy (part of the Shannara series) returns to the Ilse Witch twenty years after she has given up her evil ways. She is now serving as head of the Druid Council. But old suspicions work against her, and when she disappears, few seem to care, or even notice. Scott Brick narrates with his usual flair. His characters are memorable, providing continuity from prior books in the series and assisting newcomers in keeping track of the main characters. He brings an enthusiasm that helps maintain the suspense of the plot and creates anticipation for the next installment. J.E.M. (c) AudioFile 2004, Portland, Maine

As the heir apparent to J.R.R. Tolkien, author Brooks comports himself as well as can be expected, writing in a modern age with such gifts as he has. He is a skilled storyteller, but he has big slippers to fill. Charles Keating takes a good tale of witchcraft, sorcery, and political intrigue and brings it to the listener with polished craft, unique characterizations (How does a stone troll sound? Or a battling dwarf?), and intimate near-whispers. It is Keating's respect for the magic in the story that keeps it moving, enlivens its sometimes trite characters, and leaves one to marvel at the timbre and resonance of a talented voice actor. A worthy sequel and a listen not lacking in enchantment. D.J.B. (c) AudioFile 2004, Portland, Maine
