Riding on the coattails of interest in urban homesteading, beekeeping is becoming increasingly popular. Beekeeper and first-time author Pisano here offers detailed information about constructing a variety of hives and specialized equipment. Illustrations show measurements and exploded views of construction. In addition to hives, other beekeeping projects described include swarm catchers and feeders. Note that the author is writing for experienced beekeepers, not beginners. Terminology, tool use, and building techniques are not explained. VERDICT While the line drawings do a good job of detailing construction, there are few step-by-step instructions. Readers who already have beekeeping experience will be drawn to the various hive designs. For beginners, a better selection on bee housing and equipment is Blackiston's Building Beehives for Dummies. For a general introduction on beekeeping, Kim Flottum's The Backyard Beekeeper is a good option. Recommended where there is demand.
