Linnet Ridgeway has led a charmed life. Blessed with beauty, enormous wealth and a devoted husband, she has everything anyone could wish for. But as the happy couple set out on an idyllic honeymoon cruise on the Nile, storm clouds are gathering... Linnet's former friend, Jacqueline de Bellefort, follows her and Simon wherever they go and Linnet senses she is in danger. At first her fears seem groundless.       Listeners will recognize narrator David Suchet from his titular role on the long-running British television series Poirot. As such, it comes as no surprise that he delivers a masterful performance, capturing the great detective’s Belgian accent and the spirit of Christie’s classic mystery. While on a pleasure cruise in Africa, Poirot is called upon to investigate a mysterious murder and catch a killer before he or she can strike again. Suchet effectively transitions between British and American characters, while his portrayal of the obnoxious—and often downright emotionally abusive—socialite Miss Van Schuyler proves particularly engaging. Listeners discovering Christie’s work for the first time may have to adjust an expository style and slower pacing not found in newer incarnations of the mystery genre. And while staying on top of events may sometimes pose a challenge, the entertainment value of this audiobook and importance of preserving Christie’s place in the canon of whodunit literature cannot be denied.       Audio Renaissance has a way with narrators, and here is a fine Christie presentation. David Timson captures the the bombastic Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot, with gleeful flair. Timson uses precise diction and shaded characterizations, calling to mind reader Patrick Tull (who reads many things, including seafaring books by Patrick O'Brian), but not as querulous. Originally created for BBC broadcast, this production combines a diverse and talented cast of characters, complex sound effects and stimulating music. The cleverly produced melodrama is alive with vibrant performances that allow the listener to easily visualize each character. Sound effects--the tinkling of silverware against china, the hum of background conversations in the dining car and screams of terror--create an authenticity that is never compromised.       Hercule Poirot is on vacation, cruising the Nile to see the sites of ancient Egypt. During the trip, a beautiful American woman is killed, and her new husband suffers a bullet wound to the leg. Poirot sifts through the usual Christie cast of characters, nearly all of them with motive or opportunity or both. Reader David Suchet is known to TV viewers as Poirot on PBS's "Mystery." He brings a perfect Belgian accent to Poirot and nimbly moves from one character to the next, in and out of narration. Christie has been criticized for withholding key information from the reader (while letting Poirot know it). While this can be a distraction in print, listeners are much less likely to be bothered.       In this classic, an unlikely group of travelers is aboard a yacht on the Nile when charmed heiress Linnet Ridgeway is found dead. Luckily, Hercule Poirot is on board, and sets to unraveling the dark and tangled web of murder. While the story may be familiar, the spectacular production by the BBC brings it to life in a way impossible in any other medium. Sound effects are used sparingly but effectively, shining the spotlight on the stellar performances from the cast. John Moffat is the ever-curious and observant Poirot, and Amanda Barton-Chapple plays an incredible role as the tortured Jacqueline de Bellefort.
