Local waitress Holly Dawson needs a better paying job to cover her sister's college tuition. Given that it's Christmas and she's broke as a joke, she's feeling pretty bah-humbug. New jobs are hard to come by in a town as small as Painted Barrel, especially as the town dropout.
When Holly's offered a job at the Flat C Ranch to clean and cook for the cowboys that work there, it seems like a dream come true...except for one thing. Her nemesis, the incredibly handsome (and annoyingly arrogant) Adam Calhoun works there. It doesn't matter that he loves dogs more than people, or that he's a war veteran. No Christmas spirit can save that particular grinch.
When the rest of the ranch hands go out of town for the holidays, Holly and Adam will be forced to work closely together. No sweat. Holly can deal with Adam. And if she doesn't kill him first, she just might fall in love.

Present desires and past animosity fuel the fire between an ambitious waitress and a cocky cowboy in Clare’s delectable seventh Wyoming Cowboys romance (after The Bachelor Cowboy). Known as small-town Painted Barrel’s resident high school dropout, waitress Holly Dawson struggles to turn her talent for baking into a career. Her chance to prove herself is ruined when her nemesis, Adam Calhoun, sabotages her entry into the town’s Christmas bake-off with an excess of salt. Adam, who’s still bitter about his failed marriage, regrets his actions when he realizes how badly they hurt Holly and works to make it up to her, albeit without coming clean about what happened. Adam’s efforts prove successful, leading to a truce as the pair starts treating each other with more kindness than contempt. Impressed with Holly’s fire, kind heart, and skill, Adam’s long-boiling lust for her turns to love. So when he witnesses Holly repeatedly second-guess her abilities because of the bake-off fiasco, he finally comes clean about his sabotage—and in so doing, jeopardizes their chances at something more. The pair’s combative relationship is a delicious catalyst to their affair, and the slow burning transformation from enemies to lovers creates a firm foundation for their romance. Series fans will be delighted. Agent: Holly Root, Root Literary. -

There's not much jolly when it comes to Adam Calhoun, the hero of Clare's latest entry in the "Wyoming Cowboy" series (after The Bachelor Cowboy). In fact, Adam is a downright jerk to Holly Dawson, a struggling waitress at the local caf whose dream is to open a bake shop. Readers will be perplexed by Adam's childish behavior, including verbally needling Holly, leaving her insultingly small tips, sabotaging her chance to win a local cake contest. Adam remains puzzlingly surly when Holly is hired to cook for him at the local ranch where he works; only after he learns of her difficult home life does he begin to soften toward her. VERDICT Some may find the enemies-to-lovers transformation takes too long, but those who love the idea of winning over an irritable cowboy might appreciate Holly's efforts to put Adam in his place. Readers looking for a cowboy fix should start with the earlier titles in the "Painted Barrel" series, particularly the Christmas-themed ones.
